I think it is a sad statement on the morality of our country that we have resorted to the hero worship of people like Micheal Phelps. There, I said it. Sure he can swim like a fish and brought the USA some attention while communist China was on the grand stage. However, is there not more to being a hero than just being a gold medalist? Here we have a guy who is 23 years old. Even before the Olympics this year he had a DUI. People eagerly brushed that under the table as if it were an "oops" and not an unbelievably bad choice that could have costs the lives of others and/or himself. So there he goes, he gets a second chance.
There he is in the Olympics, constantly listening to his ipod. Millions wanted to know what it was the great athlete was listening to. Then we found out it was music with explicit lyrics such as 50cent. Great, another wonderful thing for the kids to emulate.
Now that the games are over and he has millions and millions in endorsements from companies who have tried to shine him up as pristine as a gold medal- this photo surfaces. Is it just me or does he look pretty comfortable doing that? Perhaps not his first time? Immediately I wonder what kind of idiot would have the world at his feet and not watch everything he does? Then I read his pathetic response. He basically said boys will be boys and it won't happen again. Strike three if you ask me. I would not allow him to endorse any product I was selling. In fact, you can call me unpatriotic if you wish, but I will not cheer for him again. Now more than ever, we need real heros.
